Radiofrequency microneedling is one of those treatments that took the aesthetics world by storm. Machines such as the Morpheus8 became an aesthetics sensation amongst skin enthusiasts and celebrities.
But, what is RF microneedling skin treatment? How does RF microneedling treatment work, and what results can you expect?
Keep reading to learn the answers to these questions, and determine if RF microneedling could be right for you.
What is RF Microneedling?
RF microneedling is a pretty smart combination of two treatments, into one. This means that in one session you'll have both microneedling and radiofrequency treatment. In the past these would have been separate treatments, so combining them saves you time and gets you more results.
More than a cosmetic procedure, this can also be a safer choice than plastic surgery. Depending on your skin condition, you could go for something like RF microneedling instead.
Several different brands create this treatment's machine, with Morpheus8 being the most popular. But there are plenty of great RF microneedling devices, such as Derma Group's device, and Profound. This gives you a few different treatment options, so just make sure to do your research.
It commonly is mistaken for laser treatment, but they are quite different. Laser treatments use light waves to heat the skin. Whereas RF microneedling uses radiofrequency waves and tiny micro-channels from needling.
But, how does this combination treatment actually work?
How Does RF Microneedling Work?
If you know how radiofrequency and microneedling treatments work, you'll know how the combination works. Let's split them and discuss how each treatment works separately first.
Radiofrequency
Radiofrequency skin treatment is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation option. It works to stimulate elastin and collagen production in your skin, by heating it up. Heating the skin to around 42°C activates your skin's healing response.
This increase in collagen and elastin production works wonders for loose skin and wrinkles, but we'll come back to this.
Microneedling
Microneedling also works by stimulating collagen production, but in a slightly different way. When you have treatment, the process creates tiny micro-channels in your skin. The body recognises this as damage, but it's not bad for you, on the contrary: it's great. As a result, levels of elastin and collagen increase in your skin.
A common theme here is boosting collagen production, and elastin, in the layers of your skin. This is what gives you such great results like skin tightening, skin lifting, and reducing acne scarring.
Speaking of which, what results can you expect with RF Microneedling?
RF Microneedling Results
A great option for many aspects of skin rejuvenation, lets look at what you can expect:
Anti-Aging
Wrinkle treatment is often the first thing in mind when you think of anti-aging. Good news, reducing fine lines and wrinkles is one of the benefits of RF needling. But this anti-aging effect also stretches to sagging skin, within reason.
A course of treatment will tighten and lift aged skin, and protect your skin from further aging for some time.
You can improve early stage loose and sagging skin, but unfortunately, advanced stage may need surgery.
Facial Definition
Another benefit is increasing facial definition to emphasise your facial features. A combination of RF needling and dermal fillers can give astounding facial contouring results.
But, this does have some limitations and things to consider. If you already have little fat tissue in your face, this treatment may not be the best option.
Some people have reported a sunken appearance after treatment. This is a sign of poorly performed treatment, but you should still consider other options if you have little fat tissue in the face.
Stretch Mark Reduction
Stretch marks occur when your connective tissue stretches beyond its limits. They're pretty common and often show-up during growth, rapid weight loss or gain, and pregnancy. The increase in collagen and elastin production from this treatment works wonders for stretch marks however.
Stimulating collagen production in areas affected by stretch marks is key. They may not completely disappear, but they will fade significantly. Noting that the sooner you address stretch marks, the better your outcome is likely to be, is worthwhile.
Scar Treatment
Many people find scars, such as acne scars, quite difficult to treat. Not everybody's skin has the same response to all treatments. But with that said, RF microneedling could be a great option for scar treatment. As usual this is because increased collagen production can help to repair dipped scars, to restore flat and even skin.
Pore Size
You'll also notice a reduction in pore size, mostly because of the needling aspect. Large pores will shrink, and you can improve your skin health as a result. Smaller pores are less likely to trap dirt and dead skin cells, which can cause breakouts and darken your skin.
Skin Health
A fascinating benefit of RF needling treatment is the production of new blood vessels in the treated area. Treatment causes microscopic breaks in blood vessels, leading to formation of new blood vessels.
This improves blood supply to the treated area. Any tissue with improved blood supply will then be healthier, and fuction better. This is even visible in your skin, as it looks healthier, clearer, and calmer.
How Long Do Results Last?
A regimented course of treatments will permanently reduce scars and stretch marks.
Anti-aging results however are not permanent, though that would be incredible. Unfortunately our skin continues to age after treatment, and eventually catches up with us. This is inevitable, and the case with all anti-aging treatments, but you can expect results to last 6-12 months. This depends on your skin's starting condition, and how well you respond to treatment.
The same goes for facial definition and pore size reduction.
With that said however, you can extend how long you keep the results with skin care products. A good skin care routine, tailored to your skin, is 50% of the process. That's right; you fight half the battle with treatment and the other half with a skin care routine.
